5A kayaking gear nut's dream!  Aug 03, 2011 By lover o books
The Extrasport Sturgeon is actually my third PFD in the past two years, as up until now I had been unable to find one that fit me well AND had enough pockets and space for my gear. I am not a fisherman, but a sea kayaker and most PFDs do not have ample space for all of the safety gear that I typically carry.

The Sturgeon is a comfortable PFD with plenty of straps to adjust it down to the right size so that when I am doing rescue practices the straps do not end up over my ears like my old PFDs did. (I'm short and short waisted, and that has always been a problem in the past.) I feel safe and secure in this PFD -- plus (and this is a HUGE plus!) I have everything I need at my fingertips. The pockets are so huge that I can carry my VHF Radio AND my GPS AND my camera in one pocket, four flares plus extra safety gear in another pocket, my PLB and phone in yet another pocket, and still have the fourth pocket for additional gear. I'm a bit of a gear nut, so I'm in heaven with this PFD. It is the first one EVER that has had enough room for my stuff -- with room to spare!

If I could change anything on the vest it would be the following...

1. Like the previous reviewer, B. Barner, mentioned, because of the pockets and, added to that because of the way we women are built, it can be a bit more challenging to get back into my kayak or to demonstrate rescue practices than it would be if I didn't have the big pockets sticking out so far in front. It would have been nice if, perhaps, they had perhaps put the smaller two pockets off to the side a bit instead of in front of the larger pockets. Still...not complaining. I LOVE the pocket space.

2. I wish that it was also available in a brighter, 'safety' color like orange or yellow for visibility. I have fixed that problem by carrying and wearing a cheap, mesh blaze orange hunters' safety vest over the back of my PFD.

If you are someone who carries a lot of gear and who spends a lot of time in your kayak, this is the PFD for you!

5Love it  Jun 25, 2011 By B. Barner
This PFD has been wonderful. It fits me very well and is very comfortable while kayaking. I usually have the pockets full of sun screen, bug spray, keys, phone, wallet, and snacks. Having the large pockets makes accessing the things I use while I paddle a lot easier without having to stop to get them out of the kayak hatches. It also keeps the things I don't want to loose close at all times. The price on the Xsmall has also made this vest an amazing value. I purchased one of these for my husband as well. His was over double the price, but he loves his as well.
The only problem I've had with this PFD is getting from my kayak onto a dock and trying to self rescue from the water back into my kayak. The large pockets do make it a little awkward, but not impossible to get on the dock. I've not been successful getting back in my kayak from the water with my vest on because of the pockets. I love the way this fits with a high back and mesh on my lower back. The high waist line makes for a very comfortable paddling experience. I would def rec this to anyone.
