Non-Seaworty, Ocean Kayak Unresponsive Aug 31, 2011
By hippiemama This review is for the company as much as it is for the kayak itself. I got the Bass Pro version of this boat, the Endeavor model, which is identical to the Prowler hull. I was excited to get it, because I had been paddling a shorter Pelican kayak, and this was supposed to be a step up.
As with any boat, the first concern is seaworthiness. Nice features don't mean much with a hull full of water. This boat is unsafe, and the manufacturer doesn't seem too concerned.
On the first trip out, the boat took on water, a lot more than I was comfortable with, so I had to stop and make repairs with some marine sealant. Kayaks are very small boats, so a big leak can be a real problem, and this one was downright unsafe.
It turns out that the dry hatch was not only not watertight, but some of the nuts cooked into the hull were quite loose, and the bolts were just wiggling around in the hole. No way something like that should have passed QA if they were testing the hulls like it says they do in their literature. Once I sealed up the dry hatch leaks, the boat still takes on about a gallon in six hours.
I contacted Ocean Kayak about the problem and got a form email that read:
"Hello
Thank you for your email. A leak can be repaired with plastic
welding rod. Instructions for welding can be found online at
[...]. The best way to
determine the leak location is to add water to the inside of the kayak,
dry it off, and watch to see where the water escapes. We offer welding
rod at no charge. I would just need to know the color of the kayak and
where to mail it."
I couldn't believe they actually expect me to do a DIY plastic weld job on a brand-new kayak. They then went on to try to kick me back to the dealer, which would mean a very long trip or shipping it back at my expense. If it were my company, I would have sent out another one to the customer ASAP and had the old one shipped back to the factory, or at least get the hull number so I could fix my problem. No way I would want word getting out that my boats leak, especially to a big dealer like Bass Pro, but that's just me.
Other than not being seaworthy, the only other problem I have had is one of the carry handles came off. This boat has been in the water 3 times, it leaks and the handles break off. My cheapo Pelican costs $400 less and doesn't leak and still has all it's handles.
