Excellent Buy! Jun 03, 2011
By Andrew S If you are looking for a professional fishing vessel, keep searching, but if you want a super-fun, ultra-glorified inflatable good-time making machine, look no further. I purchased this item a year ago before a lake trip with the expectation that maybe it would be good for a laugh or two, and be forgotten about. It has turned out to be a staple of all water-related trips I have taken. Here's the rundown:
4 Person Occupancy: The boat can withstand a large amount of weight, that is, it will not sink. However the bottom will sag a good bit and you and your three "close" friends will be riding very snug. Three people will be touching, but comfortable. Two people can really man the oars, get the boat moving and have room to spread out or bring along extras (coolers, fishing rods, treasure chests, etc.). One person can fully extend, lie down and enjoy a brief nap on the open water if one so desires.
Oar Eyelets, and other hooks, loops, and handles: I've taken the boat to some fairly rough waters and tied the boat off fine with no fear of tearing. The oars eyelets, however, are not rigid enough to provide an effective holder. They will twist and turn with the oars, and depending on the length of the oar, may not allow for good contact with the water. I have found that for rowing in anything but perfectly calm water, it is better to treat the boat like a kayak and just hold on to the oar.
Seaworthiness: I have taken this boat out on the ocean on several occasions, with mixed results. My first attempt was a solo voyage for a relaxing wave ride. The amount of rowing required to get past the breaking waves will take away any leisurely thoughts you were having, and if the waves are big enough, will be too much to ever get the boat out to a good floatable spot. However, if you have any children, nieces, nephews, etc., this makes an excellent play toy. I held on to the front handle and let me 2 nieces and 2 nephews ride in the boat and crash into waves. We did this for about 4-5 hours until we were all so exhausted we just had to call it quits.
Lakeworthiness: This is where the boat really shines. If you have access to anything from a giant lake to a small pond this boat can provide you with some great times. Early morning excursions with a friend and some oars can be very relaxing. It is an incredibly comfortable boat for fishing (just be careful with those hooks). If you can find a good buoy, pole, tree, etc. to tie off to, you can even catch a good nap out on the water, and as I mentioned before, super comfortable since it is all inflated.
Riverworthiness: I have not taken this boat out on a rive, though I intend to, and will update my review if/when I do. I expect it to be a blast.
Durability: The boat can stand up to some pretty serious dilapidated wood, with only minor scuffs, but no punctures. I have also laid down in the boat on beaches and lakes sides and it has stood up to small rocks and shells. It is a good idea to avoid as much sharpness as you can, as my friend's boat snagged a nail on a dock and was out of commission for the weekend. It was patchable though.
Overall: For the relatively low price of this boat, it is an excellent purchase. It will keep you pretty dry, and provide you with countless hours of fun if you take care of it. Over Memorial day weekend we spent 17 hours and 45 minutes out on the boat, and it never got boring at all. If you enjoy water and fun get this boat... Now!
Good Raft! Aug 05, 2011
By ws2falcon We received a Sevylor Caravelle-4 Raft that had been in storage for a long time, as a gift. The first time we tried it, I honestly thought that it wasn't too effective. It didn't handle well at a local lake. But it wasn't because of the raft itself. Rather, the gear did not work for us. We realized that some adjustments and/or changes to the originally issued gear were needed. The single paddles that came with the raft were basically useless. They came apart easily. So we bought a set of two Intex kayak paddles, and a pair of inflatable seat cushions designed to fit the Caravelle Raft. We also got a repair kit, just in case. With all that, we went back to the lake, and went for it. Soon it was very clear that the adjustments to the originally issued gear tremendously improved our handling of the raft. My wife and I were more comfortable because the cushions allowed us to be higher in relation to the water. Our coordination and rowing control were much better with the kayak paddles. The Caravelle-4 responded brilliantly as we rowed in a straight line, and made turns. The Caravelle-4 proved to be a good, solid raft. We'll be going on a road trip to Big Bear Lake during our vacation. And we are looking forward to rowing our Sevylor Caravelle-4 at the lake's North Shore. We can't wait!

Not what I Expected Aug 21, 2011
By Rosie I have owned a Sevylor Caravelle boat in the past and I loved it. After 20 years it no longer held air, so I wanted to replace it. I expected this boat to be like my old one. Took it on a camping trip to a lake to enjoy the float. Blew it up and was ready to launch it when I realized that my old oars would not fit the oar locks. It was useless. Sevylor seems to have changed the insert holes to an oval shape which does not work with round oars. The oars that may fit the boat don't appear to be collapsable, which is important for storage. My campout was disappointing and now I am stuck with a boat I cannot use.
