You get what you pay for Dec 08, 2009
By M. Popov ALERT! The entire paddle is 72" to 73" inches long, contrary to the description that states "The Sevylor Maui Paddle sports a long 72" shaft ...". I thought I am getting a paddle that has a 72" long shaft (perfect for me) that would be about 85" long overall with the blade. Not so. We'll see how the shop handles it as I would need to return this.
On the construction, the shaft is light, indeed carbon, and does not appear very strong. I did not expect it to be anything special, just a starter paddle. The blade is horrifically heavy - probably most of the paddle weight is in it.
Basically, would be OK to learn the first steps with, but not for serious use.
EDIT: I have sent the 72" paddle for a refund and received the 80" model (from another vendor, due to the unwillingness of LeisurePro to either reimburse me for shipping or to send me a replacement because "I bought from Amazon"; still at the thirty five price point). There are some differences b/w the two other than the length: the 72" has a shaft made of very thin walled tube and perhaps to strengthen it there is a short tube glued on top of the shaft at the ferule area (where the two parts of the paddle join). This seems to be an afterthought and wven with that, it appears flimsy. That outer tube falls where the hand should be but if you move the hand a bit up or down, then you are holding the edge of the tube and it does not feel good in the hand. The 80" paddle does not have that "reinforcement" at the joint and is nicer to hold - no slippery edgy tube right where the hand should be. Its tubbing appears to be ever so slightly thicker and feels a bit more substantial than the 72" model as far as the shaft is concerned. Still not as stong as I think it should be and I fear it may break, but in my "moderate push/flex" test that may be similar to bracing with the paddle while in use, it flexed but did not break - hopefully it will stay in one piece long enough for the short vacation I plan for it and anything after that I will consider a "bonus" -;)

Bad Customer Service Feb 01, 2010
By LD Jesse The company said Amazon listed this item for sale in error. Instead of contacting me and letting me know the item was not available Buy.com sent me an inflatable boat instead of the paddle I ordered. I returned the item over 45 days ago and still have not received a refund on my credit card. There is no one to talk to regarding this situation.

Broke within 2 months, no recourse Dec 09, 2009
By AperSon You get what you pay for, and yes, for $35 you should expect a downright defective design. When you paddle, you can feel it bend, which isn't the end of the world. But it felt like it was going to break from day one, right at the point where the two pieces join to make up the shaft, and indeed, that's what happened. Two months, less than ten uses total.
I bought it for $85 including shipping, now they're for sale two months later for $35 - a more accurate price for the quality. SunnySports won't deal with warranty issues, and Sevylor requires you to pay return shipping, even if they agree that its faulty. I'm better off fixing it with aluminum and wood, and meantime, they keep my $75.
For reference, I'm 6', 190 lbs, newbie. No big waves, no weird stresses. It might work OK for a 100 lb child.
My advice - treat it like a board: buy a decent one right from the start, and think of it as something you'll sell if you give it up. Because it really sucks to have a paddle break, 300 yards from shore in 47 degree water.

Snapped in half the second time I used it Jul 11, 2010
By Andrew Gere I ordered this paddle to keep around as a spare, and liked the idea that it was a 2 piece design, since one of my SUPs is a split board that breaks down in 2 parts for travel. Price paid was $35 + s&h, and this product is simply not worth it. The blade is very heavy, has too much area and is a complete noodle. It flexes considerably even under moderate paddling. The shaft is no better, being made of extremely thin wall fiberglass. The only material that looks remotely like carbon fiber is the small tube glued into the handle section that fits into the blade section to join the 2 halves. The T-grip is cheap plastic, and seems to have come from a cheesy raft paddle, and is not comfortable for stand up paddle boarding. Performance of the paddle is just terrible.
I recommend that you do not buy this item, since mine failed catastrophically during the second use. This happened while I was stroking for a wave, paddling moderately hard. The shaft simply shattered near the joint, leaving me holding the handle while the blade end floated in the surf zone. Stay away, this thing is no bargain even at $35!
