1avoid at all costs  Oct 05, 2010 By rick
I have purchased many items through Amazon. I have been pleased with most items, some are what I expected but this item compells me to write my first review. Do not buy this junk. I have a sailboat and have owned inflatable tenders and kayaks before. They take up little storage and can be deployed quickly which is where this review begins. The lack of quality is evident right out of the bag. Do not buy this junk. The air valves, part of the inner blatters, (pontoons) are misaligned with the access "windows" of the outer skin. Once the blatters fill, they slide behind the windows. You cannot close the valve fast, and it does not close itself, to prevent losing air, especially the center floor panel. The floor window is sewn into the fabric off center whereas the air stem of the air panel is centered-how does that happen? Do not buy this junk. The valves are cheap and do not seal well especially with side pressure which is what you get when it is behind the skin. Be sure to wear a life vest at all times with this product. The inner pontoon blatters can be adjusted by tie strings but mine is so far off I cannot align either side. Printed on my Sevylor, #90255, is an inflation psi that is different from the manual, which do I use 1.9 or 1.5? Why do they call it a pointer. Because of those plastic panels at each end, can't be, they don't keep the boat straight. Once you inflate it looks the picture shown, excepted twisted. And when your on the water, all those panels do is point up, not straight. Mine twists to the left and my arms ache from the constant correction while kayaking. The rear storage cover is off more than it is on and the seat backs are spongy. I noticed the price is reduced, at any cost it is not worth it. The only thing I can say about the pointer is that it points to bad design and poor manufacturing execution. Did I mention not to buy this junk.

3Not for us  Nov 27, 2010 By Lawrence H. Oswald
In spite of a very critical review here I ordered this Pointer kayak. We wanted it to be a quick car-to-water travel kayak. It is an interesting design being somewhat like a conventional sit in kayak. We found the quality of materials to be good. The bottom seems very tough. The deck and interior woven nylon is strong and abrasion resistant. The actual sturdy PVC air tubes (two) run the length of the boat and are totally enclosed in fabric. They are somewhat accessible via zippers. They are inflated individually. Inside the floor is a ten foot long ribbed air mattress. All this is not Advanced Elements quality but it is lighter, cheaper and very good.

There are some problems mentioned by others. Biggest is the hassle of the air valves. These valves are flexible nylon or plastic. Your air pump nozzle pushes into the valve. After inflation you push in the valve and THEN withdraw the nozzle. The valve seals itself. An additional plug adds more air thightness. (We also bought a Sevylor double sit on top inflatable that has these same valves. There they are OK because they are in the open.) On the Pointer they are difficult to access. The valves must stick up through small openings in the fabric down in a cavity in the rear of the boat. Alignment is a big problem (the access holes could easily be larger). Perhaps you can come to an accommodation with the valves but I consider them lousy. Furthermore the "air mattress" subfloor has a beach ball type valve. This asks for trouble. The seats were not impressive. The instructions sucked.

We have not paddled this Pointer and will not. I am returning it. Final consideration is that we want it to simplify our life, not make it more complicated. This is as much on us as on the boat.
