A great fishing kayak! Sep 07, 2010

I've been using the Airis Angler inflatable fishing kayak since February of this year. I cannot count the number of trips I've taken with it, all over Puerto Rico, fly fishing and spin casting in reservoirs, rivers, coastal lagoons and occasionally at offshore flats and cays. As it comes, it is an extremely well-made and complete fishing package. It is light enough to easily carry to the water, and I sometimes have to portage it for short distances to reach the waters I want to fish. Even with all my gear, this is doable. The major modification I made to it, was to add a padded swivel seat to the aluminum base. It is much easier to fly fish from the swivel seat than from the original seat. You give up a little back support, but if your paddle distance isn't more than a mile or so, it's not a big deal. With the swivel seat in place, I use one of the rod holders that came with it on the base beside the seat, allowing me to swivel easily to one side. I added a rod holder to the milk crate with gear in the stern for the fly rod. I've also rigged up a simple anchor system, using some carabiners for positioning and a small dumbbell. Eventually, I'll probably get another aluminum base and add a fish finder and/or GPS to it.
This kayak is highly stable, tracks very well, is reasonably fast, very comfortable and just a delight to fish from. I live in a second story apartment, and drive a small hatchback. With no storage space for a hardshell kayak, this one is the perfect answer to my needs. I takes perhaps 10-15 minutes to set it up to launch upon arriving at the location. When fully inflated to 6.5 psi, it is effectively as rigid as a hard shell kayak.
If you are looking for a very competent, tough, stable kayak for your fishing adventures, this is it.
